Our naturalist on staff has a Masters Degree in Parks, Recreation and Tourism with an emphasis in Environmental Interpretation.
Need to fulfill Virginia SOL or STEM education requirements with your trip? No problem! Choose from a existing curriculum or create a custom program for your students. Choose from the following core areas:
1) Outdoor Living Skills
Whether it's building a fire, identifying edible plants, building a shelter, or general outdoor safety - we specialize in teaching the basics of outdoor living. It's what we do all summer long at Camp Roanoke, and we're ready to apply these lessons to your school group throughout the year. Outdoor living skills are fun to learn and provide students with real-world skills while instilling in them a respect for the natural world.
2) Environmental Education
Don't just talk to your students about their natural world... Bring them outdoors to experience it through inquiry-based learning and place-based lessons. Whether you're studying bug life, watersheds, forest ecosystems, local wildlife, or delving into other subject areas, we can create an SOL-based experience for your group.
3) Leave No Trace
Roanoke County's outdoor programs don't teach the principles of Leave No Trace, we put them into action! Through experience your students will learn the seven principles of outdoor conservation: Plan ahead and prepare, travel and camp on durable surfaces, dispose of waste properly, leave what you find, minimize campfire impacts, respect wildlife, and be considerate of other visitors.
