"7-to-70" - Real Stories in Equine Adventure

Saturday, April 6, 10am to 3pm at Niagara Ranch - $5
Niagara Ranch is launching a new season of operations, with an inspirational array of activities for all ages. Join us for a day of hands-on activities and educational clinics including topics such as horse care, nutrition, tack, safety, feeding, grooming and leading. Experience the Reba Farm family’s unbelievable story in equestrian adventure while getting up close and personal with our herd of rescue horses. Plus, get an interactive preview of upcoming western riding programs at the park. Advance registration is recommended, but admission will be accepted at the gate. Gates open at 9:30am.

Horseback Wildlife Ride w/ Interpreter

Sunday, April 14, 2:30pm at Niagara Ranch - $50
NOTE: Date is incorrect in magazine - Should be SUNDAY, not Saturday. It’s time to saddle up and experience the sights sounds of the unique wildlife ecosystem surrounding Explore Park. To make sure you don’t miss any of the spectacular sights and sounds along the way, you’ll be riding alongside our staff naturalist. Get exclusive access to fields and trails near the Blue Ridge Parkway, previously closed to the public.  This is a beginner program with no previous experience required, and a great way to get an introduction to the thrill of horseback riding. Must wear closed-toe shoes and long pants. Helmets, and tack included. This program will meet at a trail head at 3404 Highland Rd. SW, 24014, just down the street from the new Niagara Ranch.

Horseback Astronomy Ride w/ Interpreter

Saturday, May 18 or June 22, 7:00pm at Niagara Ranch - $65
The Blue Ridge Parkway overlooks near Explore Park have been recognized as the region’s best places for stargazing! Saddle up and get exclusive access to fields and trails near the parkway, previously closed to the public. To make sure you don’t miss any shooting stars or constellations along the way, you’ll be riding alongside our staff naturalist. This is a beginner program with no previous experience required, and a great way to get an introduction to the thrill of horseback riding. Must wear closed-toe shoes and long pants. Helmets, and tack included. This program will meet at a trail head at 3404 Highland Rd. SW, 24014, just down the street from the new Niagara Ranch.

A Rung Higher - Steeplechase

Saturday, April 27, 10am to 3pm at Niagara Ranch -  $5
Get an exclusive seat close to the action as you watch our spectacular steeplechase race series and horseback demonstration. Our wranglers will dazzle you as they compete to hurdle fences and other obstacles at Niagara Ranch with the grace and control of an expert western style rider. This event will demonstrate why our program is “a rung higher,” while you learn about our unique training methods. While you’re there, experience hands-on activities, demonstrations and vendors. Mounted rides will be available for the kids for an extra $5. Advance registration is recommended, but admission will be accepted at the gate. Gates open at 9:30am.

Murder Mystery Dinner

Saturday, May 11, 3pm at Niagara Ranch - $25/$50
A lazy afternoon at Niagara Ranch takes a mysterious turn when one of the guests turns up dead. Can you figure out who “donit”? In this interactive event, follow the clues to earn points for prizes and see if you can solve the mystery. Get up close and personal with our heard of horses and farm hands who all play a key role in your adventure. Cap your experience with “cowboy style” food and thought provoking comradery, all in a beautiful setting. Western dress is encouraged. This program is $50 (including food) with 50% off for ages 12 and under.

Western Riding Lessons

Choose from several weekend sessions in  May and June, Four week program -$250
Ready to ride like a cowboy? Learn horsemanship skills that are needed with any discipline of riding. Get a hands-on experience in this new weekly program at Explore Park’s Niagara Ranch.  Simply the most advanced lessons available, whether you’re a beginner or experienced rider. Learn with a proven method that will take you further than you have ever imagined.  Must wear closed-toe shoes and long pants. Helmets, and tack included. Four week course.

Horseback Obstacle Course

Choose from several Saturday and Sunday workshops in April, May and June - $50
Test your horsemanship with a unique obstacle course challenge at the Niagara Ranch at Explore Park. Use a Reba Farm horse and hone your skills on obstacles that challenge every rider. Learn how to work your horse through the obstacles with expert help when needed. It’s great for anyone who loves horses and riding. All experience levels are welcome. Prizes will be awarded to the top three riders! Advance registration is required. Must wear closed-toe shoes and long pants. Helmets, and tack included.

Horseback Riding Summer Camps (ages 8-19)

Weekly programs from June to August
You can’t gallop until you learn to trot. Get started on the right hoof with the equine experts at Explore Park’s Niagara Ranch, operated by Reba Farm. Saddle up for a week of adventures on horseback, with no previous experience needed. the mechanics of horsemanship - both physically and behaviorally.  Good for anyone who wants to really work with, ride, and understand horses. Work with different horses and breeds daily while learning life’s lessons from a 1000 pound teammate. Participants must wear closed-toe shoes and long pants. Helmets and tack are included.

Half-day programs focus on grooming, feeding and educational experiences with limited riding for short periods. Full-day participants will experience complete western style horseback riding lessons, featuring multiple riding sessions per day. Please bring a bagged lunch.

From the Blue Ridge Parkway Visitor Center at Explore Park, take Chestnut Ridge Rd. to the service entrance intersection at Rutrough Rd. Turn right and travel 1.2 miles to Highland Rd. Turn right and travel under the parkway bridge, the ranch is visible on the right.

From downtown Roanoke and I-581, take Elm Ave. / Bullitt Ave 0.5 miles to intersection with 9th Street. Turn right and travel 1.1 miles to intersection with Riverland Rd. (SR 116)/ Turn left and travel 0.5 miles through a stoplight continue through a roundabout on the same road (bearing right). After the roundabout take a left onto Rutrough Rd (SR 658) and travel 2.7 miles. Turn left onto Highland Rd. (SR 618) and travel under the parkway bridge, the ranch is visible on the right.
