Raku Firing Demonstrations - June 11th
The Blue Ridge Potters Guild will have Raku Firing demonstrations at the June 11th Artisan Saturday at Explore Park. This process involves firing pieces in a raku kiln, removing them from the kiln at 1800 degrees and then placing them into containers with combustible materials. Once the materials are ignited, the container is closed and the potters wait until the pieces cool down.
The process results in many interesting designs including cracked glaze surfaces, black smoked unglazed clay or metallic effects. See some samples of Raku pottery below!
