    Join us as we travel to scenic Orange County,VA to explore the magnificent lifelong residence of our fourth President of the United States, James Madison and his beloved wife, Dolley. Your fully guided tour of this architectural gem touches on a little bit of everything: Madison the man, The Constitution and Bill of Rights, Slavery-Madison’s worst regret and on Dolley Madison, America’s “First Lady.” Also, a special highlight of the day is a visit to Barboursville Ruins, former mansion of Governor James Barbour, preserved as a ruin after its destruction by fire in 1884. This is one of three residences designed by Thomas Jefferson, Barbour’s close friend. Today the estate is an award winning vineyard, where you will enjoy a tour and tasting of some of Virginia’s finest wines. There is a ten minute walk to the ruins. Fee includes bus transportation, breakfast biscuit, all tour fees, a boxed lunch from the Exchange Café in Montpelier, wine tasting/tour and trip guide. Dinner on your own!

  3. CANCELED Mixed Media* (Ages 18+)

    A first time offering taught by Michael Farrar. Mixed media is when the artist uses two or more mediums in a single work. For example, using watercolor and acrylic in the same painting. You can introduce photos, photo-transfers, wallpaper, lace, fancy papers, other textures or parts of other paintings or any other media to get the look you are seeing in your minds’ eye. Sometimes when you have taken a piece as far as you can and it still doesn’t suit you, adding another medium pulls it all together. You are welcome to bring a piece you are stuck on to class to turn into a mixed media piece or start fresh in class with the intention of doing a mixed media piece. Six week course.

  4. CANCELED T'ai Chi-10 Form (Ages 18+)

    Originally developed as a Martial Art for self defense, T'ai Chi is a non-competitive, self-paced system of gentle physical exercise and dynamic stretching. It is sometimes described as 'Meditation in Motion' because it promotes serenity through gentle movements; connecting the mind, body and spirit through a sequence of blissful postures. The class consists of slow intentional movements, incorporating breathing and mindful imagery. Its goals are to relax, strengthen, connect the physical body and mind, enhance the natural flow of Chi (life force), and improve one's health. The Mayo Clinic has reported that the practice of T'ai Chi may reduce anxiety and depression, improve balance, flexibility and muscle strength as well as improve sleep quality. Six week program.

    This low impact, effective program firms, lengthens, and shapes muscles to their optimal form! We start with warm-up exercises and stretches based in Pilates, then we use light hand weights for toning the upper body, followed by highly effective deep tissue concentrated exercises to work the thighs and seat.     Join this class to have some fun and to learn techniques not normally used in naturalistic painting. You will learn you can distort, exaggerate, omit, multiply, glaze, scrape, and texture in different ways….in abstracts your work does not look like a photo or a scene. You might choose to flatten the entire pictorial space and concentrate on color in a new way, or perhaps distort shapes and use new textures in your composition. For experienced painters this is a chance to challenge yourself and think outside of your comfort zone.     Let's have fun learning to swim! This is a class for the older beginning swimmer to become comfortable and confident in the water. They will gain basic aquatic skills including; beginning swimming strokes, breath control, floating, and kicking - all of which will help to keep them safe. Games and activities will help teach them to enjoy and become adjusted to the water. In addition, they will participate in a safety lesson each lesson that will encourage them to be safe around all aquatic environments. The goal is a positive attitude towards swimming and water safety.

    Now you're really a swimmer! Swimmers in this class are very confident and comfortable in the water. All strokes are introduced and by the time they have completed both levels, they will be able to swim at least 25 yards of all six strokes. When a participant passes Level 3 they will have achieved basic water competency skills according to the new American Red Cross standards. Safety lessons become more in depth and cover more topics.

    Celebrate your child's independence in the water. This is the first class that we offer that have children in the water without a caregiver. Your child may be a beginner or already comfortable in the water. Regardless, they will learn to float, kick and become proficient with arm strokes. Rolling over and treading water will be introduced. Submerging is a big part of this class since swimming requires being able to put your face in the water! If they are more advanced they will be expected to swim more independently and with less support from the instructor.

    Our swimmers continue to build on the basic skills learned in Level 1 in the Level 2 class. The student will become more confident and be able to swim short distances by themselves. Students in this class should be very comfortable going under the water. Emphasis in this class is on learning to float without support, alternating arms and leg actions on front and back along with rotary breathing. Safety lessons are ever present in order to ensure our participant's safety around all water environments. Fun is not forgotten either!

    The single most important (and fun) thing you can do for your puppy? Puppy Kindergarten!!     Want a dog who listens better? In this basic training course, dog parents will learn how to best communicate with their dogs in order to teach them good manners. Other topics include parent separation, agility exercises, impulse control, and canine communication. Dogs must complete either Puppy Kindergarten or be at least 6 months old.     Want a new way to have fun and exercise? Swing Roanoke will be teaching classes to keep your feet moving! Each seven week series of classes will cover various swing dances like East Coast Swing, 20's or 30's Charleston, Lindy Hop, and others. No partner is required and those with two left feet are welcome! No matter how many times you have come before-classes will have fresh material to learn in each series! Classes include 45 minutes of instruction followed by practice time. Instruction by Swing Roanoke. April-May will be Swing 201. May-July will be Lindy Hop.
